Thekkady
Thekkady is located in central Kerala. It is a popular hill station and a wildlife center. The Thekkady town, which is an important plantation center, invokes up images of elephants, unending chains of hills and spice scented plantations. In the Periyar Forest of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves of India and spread across the entire district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold enormous opportunities for treks and mountain walks. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary offers a fairly good chance of seeing the great Indian tiger in its natural habitat. Though billed as a tiger reserve, Periyar is also famous for its wild elephants. Besides the tiger and elephants other wildlife that can be spotted in the park are Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langoor, bison, deer and antelope. Periyar National Park : One of the of the most interesting tourist attractions in Thekkady, the Periyar National Park is famous for its different species of flora and fauna. The National Park which also is a Tiger Reserve is the home for a number of animals like Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer and Indian Wild Dog. If you are lucky enough you can get to see the herd of playful elephants on the banks of the Periyar River.
Periyar Lake : It is an enriching experience to take a boat cruise along the Periyar Lake. If you wish to see the varied topography of the forests of Periyar then arrange for a boat cruise on the Periyar Lake. If you are a keen observer you might get to se the spotted tigers, playful elephants or the red eyed bisons. This is one of the major tourist attractions in Thekkady.
Pullumedu : Velvet lawns and rare flora and fauna add to the beauty of Pullumedu. The winding journey to this hill along the Periyar River , offers a stunning view of hills draped in lush greenery. The famous Sree Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala and the Makara Jyothi illuminations at the shrine are visible from here. Pullumedu can be accessed only by jeep. Since it is part of the restricted forest zone, special permission to visit has to be obtained from the Wildlife Preservation Officer.It is 43 km from Thekkady and 26 km from Periyar.
